The appeal of a series.

I love reading books in a series. I’m a huge fan of Christine Feehan’s Carpathian’s (her “Dark”) books. I love Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark. I can’t get enough of Alyssa Day’s Warriors of Atlantis books.
Oh, yeah, I’m a series junkie.
I like to read connected stories. Like to catch-up with heroes and heroines that appeared in previous tales. And, of course, I like to see the continued evolution of the series. Sometimes, as with Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunters, the books take me into directions that I never expected. And I sure do love that wild ride.
What about you? Are you a fan of the series? Why…or why not?
And, hey, if I’m missing out on a great series–please, let me know!

I love writing series and I love reading them. I like Christine Feehan’s ‘Game’ series a lot and JD Robb ‘in death’ also JR Ward and Mary Balogh!

January 15th, 2008 at 2:22 pmI love series books. When I find a new series I go on a treasure hunt to find all the books in that series.
January 15th, 2008 at 5:27 pmI love series but I think my alltime favorites are more trilogies - like Allison Brennan’s No Evil or anything by La Nora.
January 16th, 2008 at 5:17 amI love a good series too. It allows for a really in depth look at the world the author created, and the reader gets to see how characters evolve.
I just started reading Kresely Cole and am really enjoying the books. Right now my favorite one is the Eve/Roarke one by J.D. Robb/Nora Roberts. I’m also enjoying all of Charlaine Harris’ series.
A few non-romance series I’m reading now are the Discworld series, the Otori volumes, and any and all Sharon Shinn novels. And my personal favorite the Flashman series by the late George Mcdonald Fraser, completely un-PC, but hilarious and meticulously researched.
But, IMO, there are times when it feels like a series has dragged on forever and you can’t help feel that an ending or a change of direction is needed to keep the story fresh. In JD Robb’s novels the characters keep changing and growing, but in some series nothing/no one seems to evolve and it gets boring and old.
And another problem can be, having to wait for months/years for the next book to come out. :p (I’m literally counting down the days until the next Temeraire novel by Naomi Novik. And let’s not even talk about George R. R. Martin.)
