dodging wrenches
I had hoped to be finished with my first draft of Bite Me! by the time I posted this blog–alas, that was not to be. Not quite. I’m about 30 pages from being finished.
I should’ve written this weekend, but life got in the way. Instead of writing, I went house hunting and put an offer in on a new house.
You see, these past few months, my family and I have been living with my parents while we relocated from one state to another. And I’ve put my writing on hold because of that. Which is understandable, however, I’m under contract now, therefore my writing responsibilities have changed. Even though I know this, it has taken me a while to really absorb this…therefore, when my deadline shifted, I was caught off guard.
Writing is a lot like dodging wrenches. If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge whatever life decides to throw at you.
Sometimes it’s hard to find the “muse” during stressful times. But as creative people who have decided to write professionally, we not only have to find our muse, but we have to beat her into submission and make her work for us. On our terms. It isn’t easy, but it has to be done. So start now. Write a little every day…even if it’s only a sentence or two. I promise, you don’t wanna get hit in the face by a life wrench.
Yikes!! Dodging a wrench!! I never heard that one before, but it sounds painful. Thank goodness I write short, sweet blogs. My heart and thanks go out to all you authors who write the great stuff, so I can sit back, drink a cold one with a little umbrella in it and read without worrying about “dodging a wrench.”
Hey Barbara! Thanks for stopping by!
Dodging wrenches comes from one of my favorite all time movies, Dodgeball. I figured it was an appropriate analogy here because sometimes life feels like a wrench to the face if you’re not expecting the unexpected!
I freakin love that movie.
And yeah…it is hard to write when I don’t FEEL like it. Making myself do a little every day is a good idea.
Like right now. I wrote myself into a corner, and I have no idea what the heroine can possibly do next. grrr
I so relate. I’ve just got a new job, but the application, the angst and the anticipation is a killer of creativity. That and co-ordinating a comp really sucks up time. But keeping on plugging away at the wip is so important. Hope the house hunting works out for you Mel!
Hey, 30 pages is real friggin’ close to the end. You’re almost done! Hope the new house works out!
Ooh, I love Dodgeball, and yes, Mel, you’re absolutely right (write?)! I’ve made a deal with my boss where I can edit while at the office, particularly during “crunch time” like now. I print out about 25 pages at home, bring ‘em to work, and while I muddle thru the day job, I redline. At least I feel as if I’ve accomplished something during the day! Good luck with your house-hunting!
You hit the nail on the head, Mel.
Great blog post.

Ulk! That’s just painful. After watching that clip, I like to think we’re smarter than that, Mel. lol Good post. You’ll get those pages done. Just look at the clip before you open your current WIP. It’s a motivator, for sure. Best of luck with the house hunting. May you find the house of your dreams.
