postheadericon Weekly Discussion Topic for week ending June 30~ Favorite genres

Good morning everyone,

I know many of you are gearing up for the RWA National Conference in Dallas, scheduled from July 11th through July 14th, so I thought we’d discuss a light-hearted topic this week.

It’s a two part question.  What is you favorite sub-genre of books to read in the romance genre and why?  And part two:  What type of books do you like to read most and why? (i.e. non-fiction, thrillers, mysteries, romance, etc…)

  • The Pam:

I’ll answer for the non-pubbed here. I admit to reading almost exclusively romance, with an occasional military thriller thrown in (but not often). I know why I stay in the genre, even when it bores me, is because I read to escape and if I have to think too much to keep up with a thousand characters and a complex plot, I walk away.

Subgenres? I like contemp, rom supsence, rom com, historical, and military romance. I can do without the gazillion vampires, although I’ve read them, there’s too many now. I like a light paranormal and won’t turn my noise up at witches and the like, but I don’t do dark at all. My theory is life is too short to worry about someone else’s angst and mine too.

  • I agree with Pam. I also read for escape and don’t want to have to work too hard at it. That’s one reason I don’t generally read straight mysteries, because there are usually too many characters and it gets hard to keep them all straight. I love to read romantic comedy (if the author’s sense of humor matches mine), historical romances, and straight romances. I also read a lot of romantic suspense since that’s what I write:))). Actually, I’ll read just about anything. I just read a mermaid book, recently read a time travel, etc. As long as the romance looks intriguing, I’ll try it. I’m not much into erotica or more mainstream books without the HEA.

  • In romance I would have to say I read contemporaries the least, and Regency era historicals the most. I have a low patience threshold for sf and paranormals as well. Most of them don’t appeal to me, but some, like Linnea Sinclair’s sf novels are an autobuy. Go figure.

I like the Regency era the most because I’m a history buff, and a Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer fan, and most of my own books are set in that era.

  • Hi

Looks good! Very useful, good stuff. Good resources here. Thanks much!

    Bye
