As the winter months fade away and spring grows ever closer, writers begin to focus on preparing for Conferences–Primarily, both the RT Convention and RWA National. As a writer, do you feel these conferences help you with your career and if so, how?

I attended the RWA Nationals last July and I think what I learned there was invaluable. I was also able to network and make contacts I would not have been able to otherwise.
Attending the workshops and meeting the other authors there was an experience I will carry with me for a very long time. I think it made me more confident.
Meeting my favorite authors showed me that they are real people just like the rest of us. If they can do it, with hard work and dedication, so can I.

I attended conferences a lot more before I was published. I wanted to find the magic connection that got me over the threshold. Of course, meeting people and hearing great workshops is not the magic key but it’s valuable. I certainly recommend the conference route. I learned so much, made so many useful connections and got to see that editors were human. (And usually very young). I don’t go to conferences as much as I once did. I’m not looking for a new publisher. And I’m busy. But I still love connecting with other writers and being immersed in a world where everyone understands what it’s like to be a writer.
I enjoy going to conferences. They’re a chance to hook up with authors who I don’t see otherwise, to meet readers and to have a few minutes with my editors. It’s fun, too, to see editors who I don’t work with anymore and catch up on their news. It’s entertaining to hear the gossip and also to hang out with other people who understand the challenges and bonuses of making stuff up for a living.
It’s good for an author’s visibility within the publishing house to be at conference, to meet the local sales team, some media, distributors and other editors etc. from within the house. Plus it’s fun to see your editor wave your cover around at the house’s Spotlight session!
In terms of future business, though, I find it more effective to just go to New York for a couple of days. That way, I have the undivided attention of my editor(s) and agent, instead of their constantly being distracted by other people or worrying about other appointments. Conferences are a bit chaotic that way. Plus, it doesn’t take much to persuade me to go to NYC (!) – I often hook those business days on the end of a weekend, so my dh and I can add a mini vacation to my business trip.

I’ve only been to 2 conferences. The first was a cross-genre conference, including everything from romance to horror to poetry. The most important thing I took away from that was knowing I wasn’t the only romance author in the Yukon. LOL In 2005 I went to the Nat’l conference in Reno and now I’m hooked! There’s always people who will complain about the types of workshops or this or that, but what I got out of Reno was the overwhelming energy of everyone around me. The combination of workshops, meetings, appointments, awards show, and all-around schmoozing is incredible. It made me want to write more and it made me want to write better.
The best part, I have to admit, had nothing to do with the learning aspect, and everything to do with meeting my online friends. That in itself was worth the price of admission a hundred times over.
Unfortunately, I had to cancel my trip to Atlanta last summer, but I’m booked in for both the PASIC conference and Nat’l in Dallas and I can’t wait. Okay, the PASIC one is especially exciting because I’ll be going to a Yankees game while I’m there, and let’s face it. . . .Derek Jeter. . . .yummy!!!!

Hi, I think that writers conferences are most critical for unpublished authors. I certainly gained recognition and face to face time with agents and editors at RWA and regional conferences before I published. Afterwards, as Claire says they are nice to actually see people you meet online. Inspirational unpubbed authors should definitely attend either the FHL one day conference the day before RWA starts or the ACFW conference in Sept.

I’ve been to four RWA national conferences and enjoyed them a lot. I always learn something and it is a great chance to meet with my editor and agent, and meet other writers. I’m not sure if I’ll go this year yet — too many other trips I need to make, so I may have to pass. I’ve never gone to the RT convention because I am an introvert and my impression of the RT convention is that it is wild and crazy with all sorts of extroverted costume parties, etc. Maybe I’m wrong, but I doubt it’s a good personality fit for me.
