Weekly Topic Feb 12-18
Okay, I’ll be out most of the day Monday so I’m posting next week’s topic today. This week’s topic is: Why did you choose to become a writer? What was it about writing that captured you?
As always, post your comments and questions. I’d love to hear how and why you started your writing career…
~Blog Diva
I’ve told my story often but here goes.
I was raising a bunch of kids, some whom we’d adopted as older children and they were acting out in really weird and wonderful ways. I struggled for sanity from day to day. A friend invited me to go to a meeting to start a writing group. My mother had written and I knew it was hard work but I went–mostly to escape the house for a few hours. At the meeting, they listened to a tape on how to write a non-fiction book. You did something like list chapters, collect information and then write. It sounded so extremely controllable. So I began to write. At first, I thought of doing a story about my family life but realized I’d have to reveal truths about my kids that were not mine to reveal. So I did articles, etc. for awhile but my heart ached for romance. (I’ll let you do what you want with that statement) And I started writing fiction. It was my escape–a world where I was in control (more or less but a lot more than I was in my real life).
I still like that feeling of being in control. The worst part of the process is when I begin a story and have a muddle of ideas I have to organize into a story. I know it probably says something about me–like Linda, go see a shrink. But this is much cheaper and a whole lot more fun.
Great topic.
Linda
Great topic, Lynnette!
And I love your story, Linda.
For me it stemmed from my absolute love of reading. Then there were these characters and stories in my own head that I didn’t quite know what to do with — so one day I decided to write them down. Others do, so why can’t I? Plus, these products of my imagination seemed to need an outlet. LOL.
One of the things I love best about writing is, sadly, an area of weakness for me. I adore creating (and reading) beautiful sentences — the kind you find in literary works. I try, but I have more of a plain everyday voice. *sigh*
I see fake people.
I’d be reading a romance and my mind would wander off, and there would be these people in my head having conversations, and they weren’t the characters in the story I was reading. They were my own characters, and they were telling me their story.
Then back in ’93 I joined Compuserve’s Literary Forum to talk with other people about books. They had writing exercises, and I tried my hand at one, a scene set in the dark. It involved those fake people in my head. People who read it commented favorably on it, so I kept thinking about those fake people and asking myself questions like, “If a woman wanted to leave her husband, what would she do for money in 19th C. Florida? What would it take for a woman to become a pirate? If her husband had been really nasty to her, what would he have to do to win her trust again?”
And eventually, I answered enough of those questions to write Pirate’s Price.
Now what captures me about writing is doing more of that–making up stories about people and bringing their lives forward onto paper (and pixels) while answering those “What if?” questions.
I’ve been thinking about this question for a couple of days and I’m not sure that people decide to be writers — I believe that you either are a writer, or you’re not, and that the decision lies in choosing whether to pursue publication or not.
I always wrote and always loved it. Always read dictionaries inside my desk when class got boring. Always played with words. Always read enormous numbers of books. (Fortunately, I only wrote dreadful self-absorbed poetry when I was a teenager.) I always heard voices and dialogue and would “receive” great chunks of text in dreams and daydreams.
I always knew that I was a writer, but I never thought that I would pursue a career as a writer. I never thought I’d do it for money, because, well, I didn’t think writers made any money!
It took a job that was nearly killing me to tempt me to start writing again. Like Linda, I probably felt the need to be able to control *something* in my life and writing fiction seemed like a good choice. At first, I only intended to amuse myself, but inevitably a few people read it and encouraged me to submit it to publishers and that story had the usual ending.
I still find it incredible to be making a living as a writer – and I’ll probably always feel lucky being able to do what I love every day.
Claire
I was always far happier living in my imaginary world than the real one so it came as something of a relief to realize that I could actually write this stuff down and even more surprisingly, make money doing it!
