So, I’m curious - what makes the holiday season special for each of you?
One thing I love is the Christmas tree and all its sparkly lights. The ornaments, which have been collected over the years, remind me of people and places. The lights are magical, like fairy lights. I can sit by the tree and daydream for hours, watching the tinsel spin and the lights sparkle, remembering old times and imagining new ones. This is private musing time, unlike the (equally wonderful) busy times with family and friends. I think it’s the introspection at a hectic time of year that makes it special.

I love buying gifts, I love opening them, especially if they are books. I love singing christmas songs at home and at church. I love eating and eating.
I love the shows on television and I’d love it if I didn’t have a New Year deadline so I could enjoy all the above.

The sneaking around and finding the perfect gift to outwit two teens or the one that will bring a smile or a laugh to my grandmother.
I’d love a tree but this year with two kittens of doom and one puppy I decided to forgo the potential chaos. I look forward to sitting in the dark next year and watching the tree sparkle.
Of course, I can’t wait for my Mom’s turkey sandwich.

December 18th, 2006 at 11:12 pmMy favorite part of the holidays is continuing the tradition of making a big Christmas dinner, just like my Mom used to make (considering how I hate to cook, this is pretty surprising). Every year I roast a big turkey, serve it with stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, and bake at least two pumpkin pies (anyone coming has to bring the veggies)
. I use the big painted ‘turkey platter’ my Mom used to use, and the Snow Village china we used when I was a child. It makes me feel closer to her, and my fantasy is my children will continue to do the same thing when I’m gone.
December 19th, 2006 at 9:43 amChristmas is always the end of a frantic, busy time in Australia as lots of people go on summer holidays from then until the end of January. So Christmas is always about spending the day with family, eating a lot, then snoozing. Often it’s incredibly hot so our family have made the transition to seafood, cold turkey and ham with mangos and other summer fruit. Then there is more rest on Boxing Day and some people in Sydney go out to North Head on the harbour to watch the beginning of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Then the next day is the beginning of the sales!
December 19th, 2006 at 7:29 pmI particularly like hearing from so many friends and relatives at holiday time with Christmas cards. We catch up with each other. Sometimes this leads to phone calls too.
This has become increasing important to me since I now live far from relatives and long-time friends.

And all the beautiful decorations. It takes at least 2 days for us to decorate at our house (and fit all the boxes BACK into the closet!). But we can’t seem to resist picking up at least one new thing every year….

Like you, the tree has always been of special significance to me. I used to sit under it when everyone had gone to bed and imagine and dream. But not this year. This was our first year to have an artificial tree and it just wasn’t the same. There’s just something magical about a real tree. They have personality and a magic that is without name.
I also love reading Christmas letters from friends and white candles. There is something about a white candle in the darkness that speaks to my soul.
